I am my own worst enemy · May 15, 12:53 AM
Not that I have frequent enough posts to warrant daily (or weekly) visits from any of my faithful readers (all two of you), but the site was out of commission this last weekend.
I’m building a shed in my backyard and the best place for a shed in my backyard also happens to be smack dab over the top of my cable cable. That is to say the cable company that provides my broadband internet access has lain their cable from one corner of my yard straight to my house which means that it almost perfectly bisects my backyard diagonally. Really, no matter where I decided to put my new shed I would be placing it over some sort of line or cable.
I had bluestakes come out and mark all of the cables and my backyard looks like a treasure map with lines spray-painted everywhere.
The place where I chose for my shed needed to be leveled out and I know a guy who has a bobcat tool and he agreed to come and help me out. We knew where the cable was and I even uncovered some of it with a shovel1. Unfortunately we weren’t careful enough and he snagged the cable and lifted it from the shallow grave it was in. There was just enough pull (and not quite enough slack) that although the line didn’t break, it got pulled out of the box on my house.
Well, not only doing I get my internet service via the cable company, but also my phone service. So I found out what it was like to not have the internet for 2 days. Interestingly my computer still works without the internet, it’s just severely handicapped. I kept finding myself stop short when wanting to check the weather, the tv guide, or even my church work. I’m an addict.
So after a brief disappearance, I’m back online as is my server and the other 4 or 5 sites I serve up2.
1 Turns out that the cable company uses the term “bury” very loosely when it comes to their cable. You could almost disrupt service by jumping very hard on the ground where the cable is “buried”; which turns out to be only about 2cm below the grass.
2 Two of those sites are for my old high school and two are for my family. Nothing very exciting. But the last one is for my son’s lacrosse team. Check it out if you are interested in keeping up with his team. Most of the posts are from his coach about practices, but there are a few about the games that they’ve played and I’ve implemented Google Calendar into the site for games and such, plus there are photos from the games.
