Gone camping... · Jun 29, 09:19 AM
While others campout for the new iPhone, I’m going to go camping with my sons for enjoyment.
Not that I wouldn’t mind having an iPhone, but I think I’ll wait for some additional features I think it should have (3G?). So my boys and I are heading up into the mountains to enjoy nature and each other’s company1. This actually continues a summer full of camping for me. Two weeks ago I was camping with the youth in our ward2 and next week the family and I are traveling to Northern California to go camping with Kristi’s family for a week. Then when I get back from that I will be heading back out again (after a few days rest) to spend a day camping with the scouts and the following day camping with the Young Women from our ward. Then I get a nice long two week break before I go camping again; this time with my family for a Harward family reunion. and then two days later with the Priests3 in our ward. Somewhere in there I’m going to try and fit going on a 50-mile hike with the Varsity Scouts (Andrew, my son, is among them) up in the Uinta Mountains.
Well, I’ll just take this summer one campout at a time. I do enjoy camping and I just got a nice GPS4 unit to mess around with so I’m doubly excited. Even camping I can’t get away from my gadgets.
1 Not only the company of each other, but the entire Neighborhood, as this is the annual “Fathers and Sons” campout (which hasn’t actually been an annual event until this year—I’ve been in the neighborhood for over 11 years and this is the first I can remember).
2 Thus far in my posts I have tried to make them easy to understand by any who might pass by; specifically I mean by refraining from using words that are prevalent in the Mormon culture. But hey, I’m a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and a majority of my readers (3 of the 4) are also members of that church so I’ll through them in every once in a while. A “ward” is basically a congregation. Not too hard to understand eh?
3 A Priest in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is not what you might imagine if you aren’t familiar with our church. They aren’t the black-clothed, white-collared men who might immediately come to mind. They are young men between the ages of 16-18 who are worthy to be given the Aaronic Priesthood and ordained to the office of Priest. They are not full-time clergy, but they do serve faithfully in administering to members.
4 It’s a Garmin eTrex Vista Cx. So far I’m impressed not only with the unit itself (nice bright color screen), but the extra effort Garmin has made to make it easy to use with maps (Google Maps, Google Earth, as well as their own mapping software) and Geocaching sites that allow me to click on a link to automatically download way-points from those sites directly to the unit. Incredible.
