Game Recap · Apr 24, 07:25 PM

I watched Andrew play in an exciting lacrosse game last Saturday, but haven’t gotten a chance to post about it until now.

Andrew plays for the Jordan Beetdiggers. I’m not sure where the name came from but I’m sure it has something to do with the farming community here in the valley decades ago. The team goes by “Diggers”, which is appropriate for a lacrosse team.

The Jordan Diggers played the Murray Phantoms in the season opener, and it was a barn burner1. At the end of the first quarter it was 3-2 for the Phantoms. In the second quarter the Diggers rallied and by half-time the score was tied at 4. As the second half started the play began to get a little more physical and the ref’s called a lot of “slashing” and “cross-checking”. The defensive play was tough, but the Phantom’s managed to score in the third quarter, bringing the score to 5-4. During the fourth quarter the Diggers stayed calm and worked well as a team and managed to tie the game up in the last few minutes of the game which led to an overtime period: 4 minutes, first one to score wins.

The players were all getting tired, after playing for 45 minutes already. The coaches were rotating their teams quickly and both teams played good defense for the entire 4 minutes which brought the overtime period to a close still tied.

It all came down to the second overtime period. If no one could score by the end of this period then the game would go down in the books as a tie. The Diggers kept up the pace and got into a groove making a lot of shots on goal. The Phantoms fought to keep them away, but eventually the Diggers’ persistence payed off and they scored to win the game 6-5. A tough break for the Phantoms, but the “W” goes to the Diggers.

1 I’m not sure where that expression came from, but I use it in the sense that it was exciting. A pity that someone’s barn burned down.
