Changing server-side software yet again · Nov 13, 11:57 PM
Yes, I’m changing my content management system for the third time. I started out with pMachine, then switched to Expression Engine. Technically speaking they are the same, one is the free version and the other is the paid-for version, but still, there was some database changes and server settings that had to be altered. Now I am using Textpattern.
I’ve had this site for about 3 years now. So that’s one change per year. I think that’s more often than I’ve actually posted. It just goes to show that I’m more of a geek than I am a writer. I’m just looking for something that is as easy to post to as it is to set up. Create a database, run a few scripts, and you have a blog in just a few minutes. Posting was a different story, and I’m not just talking about figuring out a subject to write about. Having to login to an “admin” site, and figure out what category I’d post under, then figure out what I should put as the introduction, the body, and the excerpt (let alone a catchy title). And heaven forbid I’d want to use any photos — that was an hours chore in and of itself: uploading the picture to the ftp site, then moving it to the proper directory, then inserting the link into my post.
I just want something that I can type and submit. As easy as it is to send an email with a photo embedded in it. That’s what it should be like. I shouldn’t have to call upon my vast knowledge of protocols and secure shells to be able to blog. It’s got to be easier somehow.
Hopefully this is it. We’ll see in a year from now.
